How to realise the self or Atman.?
Before coming to this question let us understand why to realise the self or Atman and what does GOD mean ? .
Self-realisation or Atman-realisation is the highest awareness or understanding one can attain in the material world or Jagat. Self-realisation is also known as GOD awakening. GOD means that who is the absolute, the Complete, that who is perpetually blissful , that who doesn’t have to achieve anything in the Material world. That who plays and the play becomes beautiful Leela because it is not to gain or achieve anything but the expression of blissfulness from the fulfilment within. The Leela becomes beneficial to others because the Leela is not for completeness but from the completeness within.
Common people work for the completeness or fulfilment whereas the God plays from the completeness or fulfilment within. The difference between common people and GOD is the awareness of the SELF. GOD is the awaken self .GOD plays from the completeness . When work is done from the completeness, it cannot be against anyone rather it becomes beneficial to everyone in one or other way as it is not done to take something from the world but to uplift the consciousness of world or Jagat.
The Godly state is the highest state of the existence where nothing is left to achieve in the Material world. The God is the absolute bliss and peace. The God is Independent ,the Complete, the Sat Chit Ananda.
In fact the non-dual existence or Brahma(limitless) or pure consciousness plays roles as different forms and names. Every name and form is the character played by the non-dual existence or Brahma or pure consciousness. The “I” in every being is the same Brahma as different forms and names. Brahma is the greatest actor who plays different roles or character .When the actor in the role play awakes or enlightened ,it’s called GOD awakening or GOD realisation or the Self-realisation or Atman-realisation. Characteristics of GOD or AVTAAR or the Awaken self.
The awaken self or realised self will never work under the influence of Greed and Fear because awaken self does not work for completeness but from the completeness within. In ignorance ,Jeeva Atman(bounded consciousness) gets bounded to fear and greed due to feeling of incompleteness . Awaken self realises the ultimate truth that ” I am that I am” , the Brahma , the formless pure consciousness and the universe including body is like a projection of the self or unbounded Brahma. So the awaken Jeeva Atman understands that the self is different from body and mind and the very source of everything physical. The awaken self knows that the self is different from the character or role being played by the self . The awaken self knows that ” I am that I am” , the limitless existence or Brahma where all names, forms, time and space appears and disappears within the unbounded self in a specific pattern called Prakriti or Nature or Maya. The awaken self plays from the completeness within and the play becomes Leela simply because the play is “Nishkaam karma” , the Self-less Karma without attachment to Material Fruits.
God or awaken self need not to perform any work to achieve anything, God is free,God is completeness, God is Freedom. If God has to work to achieve something , it is not GOD or completeness. God is the completeness, the absolute who doesn’t have to achieve anything in the Material world. God only plays and the play becomes Leela as it is not for the fulfilment but from the fulfilment within. The Leela becomes beautiful, the characters played by the awaken self becomes historic because the Leela is “Nishkaam karma” the Self-less Karma without attachment to Material Fruits.
The self-realised being is the GOD or AVTAAR who doesn’t have to achieve anything extra and where one feels permanent bliss and peace out of completeness within. The GODLY state is also called as enlightened state from where there is no return to lower level of consciousness. Next to this state is unbounded awareness or Para brahma state.
Jeeva atman(bounded consciousness) always strives to achieve something because Jeeva feel incompleteness within ,which they always want to complete in one or other way in the Material world but always left with something to achieve further. They never feel accomplished and completeness within ,no matter whatever one has achieved in the Material world, there remains the incompleteness within till the enlightenment.
That notion of incompleteness makes Jeeva run after Success and achievements to complete the incompleteness but never ever feel satiated through material success. The incompleteness leads to attachment with the Material fruits which leads to bondage or sufferings in the world.
The cycle keeps on going birth after birth, life after life till one realise the Atman or the Self. Until or unless one realises one’s true nature as the limitless Brahman ,one cannot be at everlasting peace and bliss due to darkness caused by the ignorance of the self .When the light of self awareness comes into being, one gets liberated from sufferings by realising the true self as the Brahma(formless Pure consciousness ) which is limitless.Thereafter the notion of incompleteness disappears and the feeling of completeness comes into being.
Now coming to the question how to realise the Atman or the self .
Once the ultimate goal and its importance is understood ,the next thing one has to do is to find out the person who has achieved the goal or the one who is awaken one. The one who is at GODLY state and possessing the peaceful mind. That person is an ideal guru to be submitted whole heartedly. The Guru is the one who feels absolute completeness within, who doesn’t have to achieve anything in the world, who is stable and peaceful perpetually. The one who is Gyani, Nishkaam Karma yogi and filled with Para Bhakti . Just like in the presence of SUN , flower blossoms, in the same way in the presence of GURU, consciousness blossoms. GURU acts like a catalyst which facilitates the inner awakening within.
Once Guru is sought, the first and foremost thing is to trust the Guru whole heartedly. Trust is devotion or Bhakti. Devotion or Bhakti creates the bridge for seeker to Guru which will take to the enlightened state or GODLY state or awaken state.
Bhakti or devotion is beginning and the end of the spiritual path. At the Beginning it is called as Apara Bhakti done with the intension to attain the goal whereas in the end of Goal achievement,Bhakti becomes Para Bhakti or unconditional love for the Absolute which comes naturally out of Blissfulness and Peace within.
Through the channel of Bhakti one can tune to GURU and learn from the GURU. The learning then applied in Karma or Action and the process goes on till the attainment of the Goal. Learning from GURU is Gyana Marga or Gyana Yoga whereas application of Gyana in Karma is called as Karma Marga or Karma yoga and devotion towards Guru is called as Bhakti Yoga.
With Bhakti yoga comes the other two namely Gyana yoga and Karma yoga .Karma aligned to the teaching of Guru or enlightened being is Dharma as it takes to the liberation.
So Bhakti, Gyana and Karma are not three different paths ,in fact they all go in the same direction and where there is Bhakti, Gyana and Karma automatically follows. It is like when we start walking, it doesn’t matter by which leg we start with, at the end both our legs will come together. In the same way at the goal there would be all three , Atma Gyana, Para Bhakti and Nishkaam Karma.
Self-realisation is the summation of all learnings and opens the door to Freedom ,Peace and ultimate Bliss.
