Marketing in general is the process of getting the interest followed by attention of one’s target audiences or customers for one’s offerings as products or services for generating sales .And Selling revolves around sales through personal interaction & negotiation. So Marketing is the indirect way of sales whereas selling is the direct way of sales. Where Sales is the exchange of commodity for money . Since both commodity and money have value. So Sales is nothing but the exchange of values for need satisfaction and growth.
Marketing is mostly done to optimise the offerings such that the target audiences or customers are pulled towards the offerings . And in selling, one has to push or convince one’s offerings and negotiate through personal interaction . Therefore Selling is a push activity and Marketing is a pull activity focussed around the target audiences or customers to achieve business growth or personal objectives. The goal of both Selling and Marketing is only one and that is Sales or exchange of values.
So in that sense both are connected and interlinked. For business growth , some businesses rely mostly on Marketing like FMCG & E-commerce industry for sales . On the other hand some businesses rely mostly on selling like Medical equipment industry and some rely on both for growth, like real estate industry, education industry, etc. The objective of selling and marketing is one and only one and that is generating sales or growth.
Important Note:: Stronger the Marketing , lesser will be the effort required in selling for generating Sales.
